First Grade Service Project

During the month of February, Dilworth 1st graders collected craft supplies in their classrooms and made cards for children at Levine Children's Hospital. Monday, March 1 all first graders had the opportunity to make a craft kit that included something to write on, something to write with, a craft kit, play-doh and a handmade card. In all, approximately 125 assembled craft kits and 12 large craft sets will be delivered to LCH thanks to our first graders. Way to go 1st grade dragons!

2nd Grade Service Project
external image feed-the-homeless.jpg Our 2nd Grade Dragons are giving back to the community during the month of November through a partnership with the Dilworth Soup Kitchen. From November 4th - 15th, students will be asked to bring in donations of condiments (ketchup, mustard, ranch dressing, sugar and salt) and gallon size freezer bags.

On Sunday, November 17th at 3:00 p.m. all second graders and their families are invited to Dilworth Soup Kitchen at 1200 East Boulevard (inside First Christian Church) to set the tables with placements made by the 2nd graders during the school day. The students will also learn more about the mission of the Dilworth South Kitchen and how our donations help them serve the hungry every Monday.

A Season of Service at DES
3rd Grade Service Learning
3rd Grade Service Learning

Students in each grade at Dilworth conduct a different service project to help our community and world. This May, the third, fourth, and fifth graders are helping in so many ways.

The 3rd graders are gardening in the Dilworth courtyard, growing lettuce, radishes, and sugar and snap peas. They tasted some of their harvest at lunch time, and most of the students ate their veggies! In June, they will donate their second harvest to Friendship Trays, our local meals on wheels program.

Fourth graders gathered all those pennies under their sofa cushions in an effort to win The Fourth Grade Penny War! It was a huge success,

since they will be able to donate over $500 to The Lunch Project. The Lunch Project provides a noontime meal for over 900 children at a school in Tanzania, and thanks to our efforts, Dilworth students are supporting more than a week of meals.

Fifth graders had a blast making over 500 sandwiches for the Urban Ministries soup kitchen in Charlotte. "Operation Sandwich" is a popular way to serve our community since it is an easy and tangible

In December, our Kindergartners collected hats and mittens to share the warmth with our neighbors in need. Over 200 hats, scarves, and pairs of mittens were donated to Crisis Assistance Ministry in Charlotte.

Thank you, parents and students, for your generous donations.

Second Grade

Last month, 2nd graders collected 125 lbs of fresh apples, 140 pairs of socks, plus ketchup, mustard and salt for the Dilworth Soup Kitchen! They also made Thanksgiving placemats and gathered on a beautiful afternoon to help set up for the soup kitchen's Monday lunch. The founder, Mr. Allen Saxe, was grateful and impressed, and challenged our group to keep the spirit of community service going. In his words:

Dilworth Elementary students continue to be a part of our core volunteers. The students again demonstrated that our next generation is prepared for the work of making this a better world. The students are learning through service. They can do the work and they can work together. They can do small jobs and big jobs. They can make a difference!"

In the months to come, other grades will have the opportunity to serve our community too. In December, Kindergartners are hosting a hat and mitten drive for Crisis Assistance Ministry. First grade will have an arts and crafts drive for Levine Children's Hospital, third grade will grow produce for Friendship Trays, fourth grade will create a bird habitat in our Courtyard, and fifth grade will make sandwiches for Operation Sandwich at Urban Ministries.

Dilworth 1st graders spent the month of February spreading love and good cheer to children at Levine Children's Hospital. For their service learning project, the students contributed craft supplies, wrote and illustrated cards, and assembled craft kits with the aim of providing much needed fun and diversion for the pediatric patients. A huge thank you to all of the 1st grade parents that contributed craft items and a huge high five to each and every 1st grade student for the care and warmth that they extended to their peers!
